If you are a survivor of physical trauma or of physical or sexual abuse, you may feel isolated in your experience. Though each of us has a unique story, research shows many commonalities in the experiences of abuse and trauma survivors. In every case, the survivor feels a sense of powerlessness and emotional assault. This sense of injustice needs to be addressed for each client. When survivors can talk about their abuse in a safe environment and let go of confusing feelings of shame, guilt, and self-blame, they have every chance of recapturing the best parts of themselves. As a therapist, I find it a privilege to watch the transformation that occurs when the burden of abuse is lifted and the healing process begins.
