What should I look for in a counselor?

Make sure you are comfortable with your counselor. This is why giving the first session free is a good idea. If you are not able to feel safe with your counselor, your progress will be greatly hampered. Learn if your counselor meets requirements for licensure. This will tell you if your counselor has been professionally trained, and is bound by professional ethics. Ask what professional memberships your counselor belongs to. This will tell you something about your counselor’s personal values and continuing education. Look for someone with life experience to supplement their education. Many people can read a book and pass a test. But some counselors have experienced and gained from their more difficult paths in life and have more than book-knowledge to bring to a counseling session.

How long should therapy last?

This will always vary from person to person, and their unique situations. Often times it is helpful to work in eight or ten week blocks. There should be clear communication between the therapist and client so that both know the issues chosen to work on, and the treatment goals for those issues. At the agreed upon time, the client and therapist should be able to determine progress and decide together if future work should be pursued.

How will I know a good time to end therapy?

A good working relationship with the counselor and clear communication should enable the client to know her progress. With clearly stated treatment goals, the client will learn to assess for herself and mark her own progress. Often times there might be a strong sense of self-satisfaction when the client can identify her progress.

How much will therapy cost?

This is a fair question. Most of us have lived in scarce financial situations. It isn’t fair that only those who can afford therapy can get help. I charge $60.00 for one-hour sessions, and I offer sliding fees for special circumstances. I am also aware of resources in the community that assist with counseling fees. Don’t let finances get in the way of your progress. Contact me, and we can discuss this in our first session if you desire.

What kind of issues do you work with most often with your clients?

Most often it is relationship issues that bring women into my office. Often we can look at our relationships as a litmus test for our sense of well-being. For women particularly, relationship issues can lead to depression, a very common therapeutic issue. Many of my clients are survivors of abuse, and I can always say their hidden strengths are inspiring to see. Many of them have never been in a setting where it was safe to discover them, but each person has unique abilities.
